Makeup artists share new ways to wear blush
You can
change the look of your eyes all the time, play with different basic finishes,
and even try a lip game. However, what about your blush? Blush suits different
application techniques, and you will be amazed at how much change one method
can make to your face compared to another! Ready to dive into pressed blush and
up yours makeup game? Consider trying one of these new way to apply blush.
You've
probably already heard the term "blush drape." This retro-inspired
look is back in full force.
"This
techniques was created in the '70s by makeup artist Way Bandy," says Brian
Kantor, a celebrity makeup artist from New York City. "It consists of a
blush applied in a C-shape from the temple to the apple of the cheek, the color
often associated with the eyelid."
What you
need: Cantor says bright, vibrant blushes work best with this style. "If
you like the creamy formula, try ILIA Multi-Stick Cheek & Lip in A Fine
Romance, $34, a shimmering berry that matches any skin tone," Kantor says.
"Gel blush [also] is a great option for this look because it doesn't
crease. Create a beautiful, long-lasting shine by applying to desired
intensity." Try any shade from Glossier's Cloud Paint, $18.
How to take
it off: Start at the temples and apply blush around the eye area to the
cheekbone. "It should looks very diffused while still having a high
concentration of color," Kantor says. "You can stop here or build the
look with an eye brush to blend blush into the eyelid and crease to create a
blushes at the base of your temples."
If desired,
you can add a deeper shades of blush into the hollow of the cheek to create
dimension with a gradient. "For extra strength in the eye area, apply a
layer of translucent powder or matching powder eyeshadow," Kantor advises.
blush as
outline
Let's move
on to a new decade, shall we? The outline-like blush comes from the '80s full
of color, but the current version adds a more modern touch to the look.
"Unlike
the '80s version, which had a strong band of color under the cheekbone, today's
contour blush is softer and more spreadable," says Kantor. "This is
greater for adding depth and dimension to a 'no makeup' look without using
traditional contour, or for adding color and dimension to any makeup
look."
What you
need: Kantor says a deep or natural blush with a matte finish should be used
for this look. One of her favorites is Laura Mercier's Blush Color Infusion,
$32, in pink for fair skin tones and Kir Royale for deeper complexion. If you
prefered a cream or liquid version, try Stila Convertible Color in Magnolia,
$25, or Maybelline Cheek Heat Blush, $6.
How to
remove it: The blush contouring method is similar to traditional contouring
application. “[First, suck your cheekbones to mark where your cheek hollows
are,” Kantor says. Then gently rub the blush into the fold of your cheek to
create an inconspicuous contour. Start lighting and gain color until you are
satisfied with the intensity level.”
Bronze
blush
This is a
similar concept to contouring, just adding a touch of blush to the bronzer.
"Instead of going for a bronzer, try using a peach or neutral blush
instead," Kantor says. "This works especially well with porcelain and
fair skin tones, where bronzer can look very orange and sometimes messy."
What you
need: Use a peach shade or a neutral shade with a matte or satin finish.
Powder, liquid, gel, or cream blush works well for this look, so choose the
formula you like best. Cantor says CAO Cosmetics Cheek Color in Just Peachy,
$14, is a beautiful shade that has a silky, blendable texture. She also
recommends Kosas Color & Light Palettes (cream), $34. Helios is a beautiful
peach shade and Tropic Equinox is a neutral tan shade.
How to
get rid of it: There are two options for applying blush.
Option 1:
"For a 'beach fresh' look, apply blush to the hairline and chin and in a W
shape starting from the apple of one cheek over the bridge of the nose and
ending with the apple of the other," Kantor says.
Option 2:
For a more elegant style, it is advisable to frame your face by applying blush
along the hairline. Then create the 3 standard shape starting at the temple,
then run the blush around the eye area below the cheekbone and then again.
